Suggest to a lot of men that they spend some time examining their own inner life and you get a specific reaction, somewhere between a joke and a change of subject. It is worth taking that resistance seriously rather than treating it as a character flaw, partly because some of it is reasonable.
The Word Is Doing Damage

Introspection sounds like something done on a cushion, at length, out loud. Reframe it as working out why you snapped at someone on Tuesday and the resistance largely evaporates. A good deal of what looks like refusal is a reaction to the vocabulary rather than to the activity.
It Was Trained Out, Not Left Out

Boys are still corrected for emotional expression earlier and more consistently than girls, and the correction works. By adulthood many men have limited practice at naming an internal state, which is a skill rather than a trait. What looks like an inability is usually just decades of no rehearsal.
Men Often Do It Sideways

The stereotype says men do not reflect. What many actually do is reflect while doing something else, in the car, on a walk, over a shared task, facing forward rather than across a table. Sitting opposite someone with nothing to do but talk is the format that fails, and the format gets mistaken for the whole enterprise.
The Fear Is Not Feeling, It Is Not Stopping

Ask men who avoid this what they think will happen and the answer is rarely that they will feel something. It is that they will open something they cannot then close, in the middle of a week that has no room for it. That is a practical fear about timing rather than a refusal of the whole idea.
It Was Made to Look Like Weakness

For a long time the useful man was the one who did not examine things, and the culture rewarded him for it. That has shifted, but the men most affected are the ones who spent thirty years being praised for the opposite. Asking someone to reverse the thing that made them respected is a bigger request than it sounds.
There Is a Real Cost

In England in 2024 the male suicide rate was 17.1 per 100,000 against 5.6 for women, with men aged 50 to 54 highest of all. Nobody serious claims a lack of introspection causes that on its own, but the pattern of not naming a problem until it is severe runs through a lot of what is known about men and help-seeking. This is a sensitive area, and anyone recognising themselves in it can start with a GP or with Samaritans on 116 123.
The Backlash Has a Point

Introspection and rumination are not the same thing, and the research is fairly clear that circling a problem repeatedly makes mood worse rather than better. Men who suspect that endless self-examination is unproductive are not entirely wrong. The distinction is whether the thinking is going anywhere.
Therapy-Speak Did Not Help

The spread of clinical vocabulary into ordinary speech has given a lot of people a way to sound insightful without being it, and men are quick to detect performance. When boundaries and trauma and holding space start turning up in arguments as tactical equipment, the whole register loses credibility. Some of the eye-rolling is aimed at that rather than at self-knowledge.
What Tends to Work Instead

Concrete questions with an answer, asked at a normal volume. Why did that land badly. What would I do differently. What am I actually annoyed about here. Men who will not discuss their inner life will frequently answer a direct question about a specific incident, and that is the same activity under a different name.
It Usually Arrives Late

The common pattern is that it takes an event, a divorce, a diagnosis, a redundancy, a child who stops calling. Something removes the option of not looking. The unfortunate part is that arriving at this point by choice is considerably less painful than arriving at it by force, and almost nobody does.
Where This Leaves Things

The resistance is a mix of two separate objections, one of which is worth listening to. The reasonable one is that self-examination without a destination is just worrying with better branding. The unreasonable one is that a man who understands why he behaves the way he does is somehow less of one, and that idea has caused a great deal of damage to people who never questioned it.
